    • @TheHiddenHomestead
      @TheHiddenHomestead 2 місяці тому

      That’s a good point, however as mentioned at the beginning of the video this isn’t a SHTF sort of bug out. My thought is that while some natural disasters can be pretty massive in scale they normally don’t take out an entire regions complete infrastructure. *Normally. So getting a hot meal at a family’s or friend’s house, hotel or restaurant down the street or next town over wont be impossible.

    It looks amazing, and full credit for your film set of a shower room. But I am concerned about the upkeep. That looks like it'd be a nightmare to clean... is it?

    • @TheHiddenHomestead
      @TheHiddenHomestead 2 місяці тому

      Thank you! Well, I’ll say that it’s not an average shower so admittedly it does take longer than average to clean. That being said, it’s really not that bad. Two to three times a week we do a quick spray down with a 50/50 water/vinegar mix after we shower. Every other week we use the same mix and scrub it down with a powered/rotating medium bristle brush. We have a few different shaped heads that we can use to get in all the hard to reach areas. Then if needed, once or twice a year we’ll go in and use something a little stronger than the water/vinegar if there’s a lot of soap scum build up. It normally doesn’t get that bad though if we stay on it with the water/vinegar mix.

    What happens if someone steals your bag and has all of your personal information in there, ie your credit card information, and everything you put on there. That's why I personally don't like doing that.

    • @TheHiddenHomestead
      @TheHiddenHomestead 2 місяці тому

      That’s a good point! Thanks for the comment. I’m not attempting to argue because that is a valid concern. I guess my thought behind it was that if it’s a natural disaster, the bag would leave the house and go directly to a hotel or to a family member’s home. So point A to B, in my possession and/or secured. No different than my wallet on my person if anyone wanted to steal it. If it was a true SHTF scenario, personal info would probably be completely useless to other people as we’d be dealing with a possible societal collapse and they’d be more worried about tangible things that could be used immediately.

      I don’t believe it would be difficult at all. If you’re concerned with mess just put some plastic or a drop cloth down on the table. If you do it inside your home I would exercise extreme caution melting and mixing the ingredients. The liquids are HIGHLY flammable. If possible I would try to do that outside.

    • @PocketsandOutlaw
      @PocketsandOutlaw 2 місяці тому

      @@TheHiddenHomestead I heard the microcrystaline wax gives off some really nasty fumes. But I also hear mixed info on that. Waxing makes it pretty unfeasible to wear in the summer, correct? It's one thing to have an unwashable jacket, but unwashable pants could get nasty fairly quickly if you sweat a lot.

    • @TheHiddenHomestead
      @TheHiddenHomestead 2 місяці тому

      It’s not the wax that’s really flammable. It’s the tung oil finish and especially the mineral spirits. Yeah. If you sweat a lot they will get funky. That being said I’ve had people comment on here that they use cheap vodka to wet the inside. The alcohol kills all the bacteria that causes the funky smell

    • @TheHiddenHomestead
      @TheHiddenHomestead 3 місяці тому

      I mix fireclay into the mortar. I have done some tests with this mix where I blasted it with a big weed burner torch. It glowed red but didn’t crumble. That being said, I don’t recommend it. I always put a smokeless or gas insert in them which just insures the longevity and the functionality of them.

    • @TheHiddenHomestead
      @TheHiddenHomestead 3 місяці тому

      It’s a special mortar that I make specifically for vertical applications. There’s a lot of pre-bagged mixes out there to choose from but this one is definitely more economical. I am in the process of making a full online course that goes over all of it. For now though, if you’re interested I have a link to the ingredients, and the how/why of the mix pinned to the top of the comments section. Admittedly, it’s on my Patreon channel so it does require payment for access to get all the information.

    Is there anything I can use in place of the tung oil finish that work work as good?

    • @TheHiddenHomestead
      @TheHiddenHomestead 3 місяці тому

      🤔 I can’t think of anything off the top of my head. Technically you probably don’t need the tung oil finish. Tung oil by itself takes a long time to cure. The reason the tung oil finish is used is for the “drying agents”. It helps speed up the curing process of the actual tung oil. If you wanted to set it and forget it for a few weeks you could probably get away with not using it. But don’t get excited and wear it to soon. You’ll potentially get the tung oil on everything else you touch.

    • @TheHiddenHomestead
      @TheHiddenHomestead 3 місяці тому

      It is cedar and redwood which is rot resistant. So, other than fading a little they have held up really well. I don’t have much to compare it to personally other than old cedar fence posts. These haven’t been in the ground that long yet, so it’s hard to compare. This isn’t anything new though. It’s a very old technique of preserving wood.
